- 1. Which Weight Spindle for Different Types/Weights of Yarn?
-
The weights below are a rough guide to help you choose a spindle for the yarn that you want to spin.Laceweight-4ply (AU) - 11 grams - 28-30grams (0.4oz -1.2oz)Sportweight - 5ply-8ply (AU) - 36-50grams (1.3oz - 1.7oz)Worsted/Bulky- 10ply-16ply (AU) - 54-74grams (1.9oz - 2.6oz)Heavier spindles 54grams + (1.9oz +), with large whorls, are great for plying too, as the weight helps to keep the yarn taught when the two (or more) singles are being plied together, and the large whorl means you can pack more plied yarn onto the spindle.I find that a 36-44gram/1.3oz-1.4oz is the spindle I use the most, as it can handle quite a lot of yarn weights.
